I am a literacy tutor. My student is a US-born woman in her 50s who had to leave school at a young age. She is going blind. Difficulties aside, she is faithful and ever so grateful for the life she’s had. She spends her time during the holidays giving back. In today’s session, she told me she and her husband and family (kids, grandkids) spent the past few days organizing toiletry bags they keep in the car to give to homeless individuals they may encounter. She also organizes holiday parties/gifts for two women and teen shelters. All while receiving weekly all-day treatments to battle her disease and encroaching blindness and studying so she can say she learned to read before she goes blind. She is the embodiment of what is good in this world.
I listened to elder lady tell me her story. I sat and listened. At the beginning of our conversation I could tell she was sad, but by the end she was excited! It means a lot to people to listen to their stories!
I volunteer with many organizations, the VFW, Ronald McDonald house, adopt a family and our local food banks. However, my daughter at 19 donated bone marrow to an infant. She never was asked to or was thanked she just did it. For that I give back as much as I can.
Helping out with a home remodel for the past 2 months. Painting & redecorating, while working around contractor schedules.
