We Moved into a house this past summer across the Street from the brightest, sweetest 94 year old women who lives alone. Yes we help her. We take her trash to the road my husband does repairs, I weed her flower beds, we bring her goodies, ice when the power went out, called the the phone company when her phone went down, went to her door at 10:30 pm when we heard gun shots in the neighborhood, because we know she hears everything. Most importantly we take time to sit with her and just talk. She has given us these opportunities to help her and to love her. In the mere 5 months we have known her she has become a very meaningful part of our life. She is grateful for us and believes God sent us. I’m sure she is an angel and was sent to us. The more you give the more you get back. Lessons from Mary Lois : 1.do what you enjoy 2.keep going and trying new things 3. Play in the dirt!
Donating gifts for less fortunate children who otherwise may not received anything at Christmas time.
I’m a special ed teacher…I don’t reflect on how my kindness impacts children daily until I received a letter from a mother thanking me. Her son went home and told her that I stood up for him against bullies who stole something out of his bag. He is not in my class and it did not benefit me to do so. However, the expression on his face when someone actually stepped up without being asked to, without being part of the job…was priceless.
My Thanksgiving Day plans with family was cancelled due to my husband getting sick. This forced me to think of a contingency plan to provide a hot meal for my husband and kids, whom were now stuck at home. While running out and picking up our food from the only restaurant open (Metro Diner), I passed a small group of construction workers, freezing in the cold but working hard on Thanksgiving. Not sure what the situation was, but I felt they too needed a hot meal. So while picking up my family’s food, on a whim, I purchased an additional 4 hot Turkey dinners and brought it to the workers and wished them a Happy Thanksgiving. Everyone deserves a nice hot meal during a time that we should all feel Thankful for our blessings.
