  1. I had just walked into a store, in a hurry to get what I needed and get out again. I was busy. I collected a basket and as I walked further I noticed a woman who was struggling with a pile of items. I held out the basket to her and said, “You need this basket.” I gave it to her. She said she would get me a basket, but I just said that was okay and got another one. I was busy, but I was not that busy that I didn’t notice someone who needed help. It is a small thing, but I truly believe that we need to look after each other and I can’t know how my actions might affect another person, the ripple of a small action turning into something larger. Maybe the biggest change is in my own heart.

  2. Every week, I invest my time with high school students in the youth group at my church. I want them to know they matter- to me and to God. I try to encourage them so it can help them grow stronger as a person and in their relationship with God.

  3. Another student in my nursing program also struggling with a sick parent wishing him luck and to pass his final with the grade he needs.

  4. I am a literacy tutor. My student is a US-born woman in her 50s who had to leave school at a young age. She is going blind. Difficulties aside, she is faithful and ever so grateful for the life she’s had. She spends her time during the holidays giving back. In today’s session, she told me she and her husband and family (kids, grandkids) spent the past few days organizing toiletry bags they keep in the car to give to homeless individuals they may encounter. She also organizes holiday parties/gifts for two women and teen shelters. All while receiving weekly all-day treatments to battle her disease and encroaching blindness and studying so she can say she learned to read before she goes blind. She is the embodiment of what is good in this world.
