  1. It was a brisk Tuesday evening as I made my way from the university to Tesco, clutching just three pounds in my hand. My intention was to grab some snacks for an impending night of studying. But as I stood before the store, I found myself debating what to buy that could stretch my meager budget until the week’s end.

As I pondered my choices, my attention was drawn to a homeless man nearby. He appeared lost, staring into the distance, perhaps lost in his own thoughts. I couldn’t help but imagine what it must be like for him out in the cold, especially with the temperatures dropping.

People were entering and exiting the store, but I noticed that he was trying to reach out to them, asking for assistance. Sadly, it seemed that no one paid him any mind. I proceeded into Tesco with my original snack mission in mind, but as I shopped, I couldn’t shake off the man’s situation.

I overheard him asking for a simple pack of grapes, something that most of us take for granted. However, no one seemed inclined to help. As I reached the grape section, I realized I didn’t have enough money for both my intended snacks and the grapes.

At that moment, I had a profound realization. I asked myself, “Do I really need this, or does he need them more?” Fortunately, I had just enough to pay for that pack of grapes. I purchased it and handed it to him. He hadn’t directly asked me for help, but the indifference of those around him left me with a compelling question: “If not me, then who?”

My plans for the evening had taken an unexpected turn, but as I left Tesco, I couldn’t help but smile. I knew that in that small act, I had brought a glimmer of warmth to someone’s cold evening.
